John 1:12–13

John 1:12–13

Part of: St. John’s Gospel — Day 5

Lectio

12. But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.
13. Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Meditatio

The rejection described earlier is not the final word. Those who receive the Word and believe in His name are given a new dignity: the power to become children of God. This gift is not natural but supernatural, a participation in God’s own life (Augustine). It is not inherited through lineage, nor produced by human desire or effort; it comes directly from God’s initiative. To believe is to be drawn into a new birth that has its source in God alone, a birth that reshapes the soul and makes it capable of divine things (Hilary, Origen). This new life is the beginning of a relationship in which God is truly Father and the believer is truly His child.
