John 1:14

John 1:14

Part of: St. John’s Gospel — Day 6

Lectio

14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Meditatio

The eternal Word, who is life, light, and the Creator of all things, entered the world by taking on human flesh. This does not mean a change in His divine nature but the assumption of our nature into His own person (Hilary, Augustine). The same Word who is eternally with God truly became man, uniting the divine and human without confusion or division. He dwelt among us—literally “pitched His tent”—showing that God has come close, choosing to live within the conditions of our humanity (Chrysostom).

In Him the disciples beheld a glory that did not arise from human greatness but shone from His eternal origin as the only-begotten Son of the Father. This glory was veiled by His humility yet revealed in His words, His works, and His very presence. He is full of grace and truth: grace that heals and restores, and truth that unveils God as He truly is (Cyril, Augustine). In the Word made flesh, the unseen God becomes visible, approachable, and knowable.
