John 1:09–11

John 1:9–11

Part of: St. John’s Gospel — Day 4

Lectio

9. That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.
10. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

Meditatio

The Word is the true light, the source of every genuine illumination that reaches the human mind. Whatever truth or insight a person receives is only a ray from this one eternal Light (Augustine, Origen). The world was made through Him, and He was present within it—not as a stranger to His creation, but as its very foundation and life. Yet the world did not recognize Him, for the darkness of ignorance hid the Creator even when He stood within His own work (Chrysostom).

He came to His own, entering the people and the place that belonged to Him by covenant and prophecy, but they did not receive Him (Hilary, Augustine). This rejection does not diminish His glory; it reveals the poverty of human response and the mystery of a love that seeks even those who turn away.
