John the Baptist enters the scene not as a source of light but as one sent to point toward it. His mission is wholly from God, and his greatness lies in bearing witness, not in drawing attention to himself (Chrysostom). He prepares hearts to recognize the light when it appears, calling people from darkness toward faith. His testimony serves to direct all belief toward the true Light, making clear that salvation comes not through the messenger but through the One he proclaims (Augustine, Origen). By distinguishing John from the Light, the Gospel prevents confusion: the Baptist is honored, but only as a witness, never as the source.
