John 1:04–05

John 1:4–5

Part of: St. John’s Gospel — Day 2

Lectio

4. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Meditatio

In the Word is the fullness of life, not as something received but as something that belongs to Him eternally. All life that exists comes from Him, and the life that flows from Him becomes light for human beings — the illumination of the mind and the awakening of the heart (Augustine, Origen). This light is not merely intellectual knowledge but the divine clarity that draws the soul toward God.

The light shines into a world darkened by ignorance and sin, and it continues to shine without ceasing (Chrysostom). The darkness does not overcome it, not because darkness lacks hostility, but because it lacks power. Darkness cannot grasp or extinguish what is divine; it cannot seize or contain the light that comes from God (Hilary, Augustine). The Word’s light reveals, judges, and invites, yet remains unconquered in the face of resistance.
