How to Pray Lectio

Lectio Divina is the traditional way of praying with Scripture.
It unfolds in four movements:

Lectio – Reading a sacred text slowly and attentively.

Meditatio – Reflecting on what you’ve read, either through your own thoughts or with the help of a commentary.

Oratio – Responding to God in prayer after your meditation.

Contemplatio – Resting in God’s presence, allowing Him to speak through quiet inspirations and insights.

Many modern guides provide suggested prayers during the Oratio stage. I have chosen not to include these, as it is usually more fruitful to express your prayer in your own words rather than relying on someone else’s.

“Contemplatio,” by its nature, can never be provided for you. It is the quiet openness that follows your prayer.

After completing the Lectio and Meditatio, it is important to spend at least a little time in Oratio, responding personally to God before moving on to Contemplatio.
